Entry Requirements for Canada
Planning a trip to Canada? Let's break down what you need to know before you go. From COVID-19 guidelines to border crossing rules, we've got you covered.
COVID-19 Guidelines
Good news! As of October 1, 2022, Canada has scrapped all COVID-19 entry restrictions. No more testing, quarantine, or isolation for anyone entering the country. This change is thanks to high vaccination rates and better treatments.
But hey, don't throw caution to the wind. If you feel sick during your trip or after you land, take the necessary steps to keep yourself and others safe.
Cruise lovers, rejoice! No more pre-board testing or vaccination proof is needed. Just follow the basic guidelines to keep everyone on board safe, similar to U.S. protocols.
Border Crossing Regulations
Whether you're flying, driving, or sailing into Canada, there are a few things you need to know:
- Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): Most travelers from visa-exempt countries need an eTA to fly to Canada. The processing time is usually quick—think minutes, not hours.
- Visa Requirements: U.S. citizens can skip the visa for short visits. If you're from another country, check if you need a visa and get it sorted before you travel.
- Proof of Citizenship: Don't forget your passport or other valid ID. You'll need it to prove who you are.
- Advance Declaration: ArriveCAN isn't mandatory anymore, but you can still use the Advance Declaration feature to speed things up at the airport. Submit your customs and immigration info ahead of time.
For more details on what documents you'll need, check out our section on Travel Documents for Canada.
So, pack your bags, grab your passport, and get ready for your Canadian adventure!
Travel Documents for Canada
Planning a trip to Canada? Make sure you’ve got the right travel documents. Here’s what you need to know.
Visa and eTA Info
Most folks need either a visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly to or through a Canadian airport. Knowing which one you need is key.
Who Needs an eTA?
An eTA is for visa-exempt travelers flying to Canada. U.S. citizens don’t need an eTA, just a valid passport. The eTA links to your passport and lasts up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. For more on applying, check out our eTA Canada application guide.
Who Needs a Visa?
If your country isn’t visa-exempt, you’ll need a visa to enter Canada, whether for tourism, business, or other reasons. Apply well before your trip to allow for processing time.
U.S. citizens don’t need a visa for short visits (less than 180 days). More details are in our Canada visa for US Citizens section.
Proof of Citizenship
Canadian law requires everyone entering Canada to carry proof of citizenship and identity. This helps confirm your eligibility and avoids delays at the border.
Acceptable Documents for U.S. Citizens
For U.S. citizens, acceptable documents include:
- Valid U.S. passport
- Passport card
- NEXUS card
Kids under 16 can enter Canada with proof of U.S. citizenship, like a birth certificate (Travel.State.Gov).
Before you go, make sure you’ve got all the necessary documents to meet Canada’s travel requirements. For more tips and info, check out our articles on Canada eTA processing time and heat protectant for hair straightening.
Customs Regulations in Canada
Planning a trip to Canada? Knowing the customs rules can save you a lot of hassle. Here's a straightforward guide to help you navigate the goods declaration process and understand personal exemptions.
Goods Declaration Process
When you enter Canada, you gotta declare what you're bringing in. This applies whether you're flying, cruising, or driving. Even if you're a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident coming back home, you still need to declare any goodies you picked up abroad.
The Advance CBSA Declaration lets you submit your customs info ahead of time. People who use this feature breeze through the kiosk 30% faster and can often use express lanes at the airport.
But beware: if you don't declare your stuff or lie about it, you could lose your goods and face fines ranging from 25% to 80% of their value.
Personal Exemptions
Depending on how long you've been outside Canada, you might qualify for personal exemptions. These let you bring in goods up to a certain value without paying duty and taxes.
You can also send gifts worth up to Can$60 to someone in Canada without paying duty and taxes. Just remember, these gifts can't be tobacco or alcohol.
Health and Safety Tips
Vaccination Recommendations
Planning a trip to Canada? Make sure you're up to date on your shots to keep your adventure smooth and safe. Here’s what you need to know:
- COVID-19 Vaccines: If you're eligible, get your COVID-19 vaccine before heading to Canada. This applies to everyone, especially if you're under 60 or over 60 (CDC Travel - Canada).
- Hepatitis A: If you're planning to explore smaller towns, villages, or rural spots, or if you love street food, consider getting the Hepatitis A vaccine. It’s a good precaution against contaminated food or water.
- Routine Vaccines: Don’t forget your routine vaccines like the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella). Measles is on the rise globally, so being fully vaccinated at least two weeks before you leave is a smart move.
Wildfire Precautions
Canada can have wildfires, especially during certain seasons, which can mess with air quality and safety. Here’s how to stay safe:
- Avoiding Impacted Areas: Stay away from regions hit by wildfires and limit your exposure to smoke. Listen to local authorities and keep an eye on alerts from the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Canada.
- Checking Alerts: Regularly check for updates on wildfire situations. Staying informed helps you plan your travels and avoid affected areas.
